Page Curation newsletter
Hey Go Phightins!. I'm dropping you a note because you used to (or still do!) patrol new pages. This is just to let you know that we've deployed and developed Page Curation, which augments and supersedes Special:NewPages - there are a lot of interesting new features :). There's some help documentation here if you want to familiarise yourself with the system and start using it. If you find any bugs or have requests for new features, let us know here. Thanks! I de-prodded because I couldn't figure out your reason. "G10" is for attack pages. You must have meant something else? It's probably best not to use CSD codes in prod reasons where newbie article creators won't be able to understand them. —Cupco 21:03, 24 September 2012 (UTC)
- G11 is what I meant...you're probably right. There's been some improvement, so I'll let it go for now. Go Phightins! (talk) 21:05, 24 September 2012 (UTC)

Thome review
I see the peer review solicitation has closed without any responses. Typically PR is for articles that have already attained a certain level, such as GA. I have left comments on the PR archive page anyways. If the items are tended to and it is submitted for GAN, I will review it. Zepppep (talk) 10:25, 26 September 2012 (UTC)

DeWitt 8891 here (DeWitt Ross & Stevens S.C.), I'm just figuring WIKI out, and you've marked my first "article" for speedy deletion although all other firms in my area are listed (Quarles & Brady, Foley & Lardner, Michael Best, Von Briessen, Axley, etc.).
I attempted to write it from a historical and basic fact view point, especially given we have two prominent historical figures in Wisconsin who were founders of this firm. Please tell me what I need to change in order for it to conform. I read the G11 Requirement and don't see what in my overview is "promotional". I sincerely spent ALL day trying to figured out the formatting and other compliance issues and would appreciate a response. Dewitt8891 (talk) 21:03, 25 September 2012 (UTC) |
- Hi, and welcome to Wikipedia! I understand what it's like having your first article tagged for deletion, it happened to me too with James Urban. Anyway, the reason I tagged your article for speedy deletion is that it was written from the perspective of what would likely be on a firm website. It sounds like an advertisement. I do, however, feel that it is salvageable, so I removed the CSD template. To keep the article, I'd strongly recommend going through it and adjusting it so it doesn't sound so promotional. Also, it needs to be wikified to meet formatting standards. Sorry that this is such an influx of information, if you have any questions, please let me know. Thanks--Go Phightins! (talk) 21:18, 25 September 2012 (UTC)
- That might be quite difficult to do. I see a rather large issue with Wikipedia:Conflict of interest. Zepppep (talk) 10:26, 26 September 2012 (UTC)
In adding this page I am only trying to add information about our firm in the context of all the other firms that are listed and provide detailed information about the firms (Foley, Michael Best, Axley, Von Briessen, etc.) It is a matter of being included with our peers and if there is a conflict of interest, I publicly disclose that conflict and would hope it is in compliance with said rule "When someone voluntarily discloses a conflict of interest, other editors should always assume the editor is trying to do the right thing. Do not use a voluntarily disclosed conflict of interest as a weapon against the editor." If it is not, then I would assume that not only our page is in conflict but also those of all the other law firms and we should all be treated equally, either included or excluded from Wikipedia. Believe it or not, law firms do have historical roots in the fabric of their communities and including information on them isn't self promotional. ----DeWitt 8891
Hi, I did and made a few changes, tried to remove adjectives. I will have my assistant spend some time today trying to wikify it. As I'm sure you're aware, there are a lot of standards and for those of us new to adding an article, it is a bit overwhelming but I do want our page to be in compliance so please give me a few days and I will try to get it up to speed :) Thanks Dewitt8891 (talk) 14:42, 26 September 2012 (UTC)DeWitt8891 — Preceding unsigned comment added by Dewitt8891 (talk • contribs)
All right, are you affiliated with the firm? Go Phightins! (talk) 16:33, 26 September 2012 (UTC)
yes, I am the Director of Marketing (Michelle Friedman http://www.dewittross.com/our-people/michelle-friedman). We hired an SEO specialist who indicated we did not have a page on Wikipedia while all of the other firms did. So I did some searching and determined that was accurate and obviously those pages were added by the firms. Again, if it's against the rules, I'm cool with that, but from an information perspective, our firm shouldn't be absent among all the others. So, either all of them come down or stay up, I'm not sure.
I will try and add relevant individuals who have worked with the firm, similar to Foley's profile, if that will help. I have my assistant working on wikifying the page so it is straight objective data. Again, our firm is the oldest on the Capitol and was featured on a public radio station regarding how it has survived so long, it has a long history in the city of Madison and maybe some kid will do a paper, I don't know. But I don't want to spend a lot of time if it is for not, so please let me know. Thanks. ----DeWitt8891 — Preceding unsigned comment added by Dewitt8891 (talk • contribs) 17:41, 26 September 2012 (UTC)
Well, I pretty much re-wrote the article and it still doesn't really conform to Wikipedia's quality standards, but it's a start. At this point, the article needs reliable secondary sources to establish notability. And to your argument regarding other firms in your area having Wikipedia pages, WP:OTHERSTUFF asserts that that's an invalid argument towards this one having a page. Thanks--Go Phightins! (talk) 19:27, 26 September 2012 (UTC)
I appreciate your assistance in rewriting the page. I will have my assistant include reliable secondary sources as outlined in your link. Hopefully it will meet and conform, if not, we gave it a shot. Again, thanks. ----DeWitt8891

Hello Go Phightins and thank you for patrolling new pages. I noticed that you tagged Arabiusing lots in israel for speedy deletion under criterion A1. Bob Davidson
Thanks for getting involved with the Bob Davidson article, it's good to see another editor take an interest in an umpire page. If you'd like to officially join the task force, that would be great! Of course, you don't have too and it really has little to no effect on your editing in general. With regards to our conversation on my talk page, I am leaning towards accepting your offer, perhaps in about a month. However, I might try to get advice from some other editors on whether or not running for adminship at six months could be harmful to a future RfA. AutomaticStrikeout 03:35, 30 September 2012 (UTC)

- I do have a quick question. As I have been adding some references to articles, each time I add a link to an outside source (i.e. a newspaper article), Wikipedia asks me to type in some words to show that I'm not spamming the article. Is there something wrong with the links I'm adding (they are to online newspapers, so I don't think they are inappropriate)? After awhile, if Wikipedia sees that my edits are not indeed spam, will I not be required to type these words in anymore? Thank you for your help. Tucsontammy (talk) 18:13, 30 September 2012 (UTC)
- Hmmm, I have never had that happen to me. Are you adding the newspapers as citations or external links? Go Phightins! (talk) 18:15, 30 September 2012 (UTC)

Municipality of Ashfield
The page Municipality of Ashfield is inaccurate and its content under controversies can not be verified. Please delete it or verify its accuracy. Please do not undo my deletes they are justified and correct in the procedure wiki suggests.
There are no reputable sources that verify any of what has been entered into controversies.
This is a blatant personal attack on one person. Why are there no other matters canvased. The author of the page has a personal grudge on Nick Adams. It does nothing for the reputation of Wikipedia to sponsor and support such attacks.
Why should I help destroy someones reputation. The author has a personal vendetta against Nick Adams. There have been many other controversies at the council. Why have these matters not been mentioned? Please do no support or harbor vindictive attacks on Wikipedia!! Delete controversies or mention them all. Do not be selective. It reduces Wikipedia's reputation to do so.Thankyou.
Please delete the section, if you can not verify it. It is vexatious and a deliberate attempt to sully the reputation of a person.Macashfield (talk) 06:00, 30 September 2012 (UTC)
- Judging by your username, I'm guessing you're in affiliation with the municipality, which means you shouldn't be deleting anything for the sole purpose that it reflects poorly on the municipality. The content in question is referenced, so I'm not sure why you're arguing to the contrary. Go Phightins! (talk) 12:19, 30 September 2012 (UTC)
- please do not treat me as a moron. Every link in the controversies section is dead. Have you verified the references? I have not been able to, even though I have tried exhaustively. Please take down the content that you or anyone else can not verify,Macashfield (talk) 12:31, 30 September 2012 (UTC)
- I just re-read the section and there are three references which clearly substantiate the content in question. I'm not sure why you feel I'm treating you like a "moron". If I thought you weren't acting in good faith I probably would have ignored your posts and reported you to WP:AIV. I have no doubt that you question the content's legitimacy, but it is sourced and therefore will stay unless you or some one else provide contradictory sources. Thanks. Go Phightins! (talk) 15:59, 30 September 2012 (UTC)
- I have already told the user many times that there three sources to back it up. But anyways it seems that another user has removed the information on the article with his edit summary saying weakly sourced negative material per WP:BLP. But I'll kept it that way, since it isn't 100% sourced. --Webclient101 (talk) 16:53, 30 September 2012 (UTC)
- I think 3 sources is clearly enough to substantiate content of that nature...Go Phightins! (talk) 17:11, 30 September 2012 (UTC)

Articles for creation/Monda Market
Hi Phightins
The references given for this article are from two of India's most reputable newspapers. Its surprising you could not notice it. In case you are familiar with India you must be knowing that The Hindu and Times of India are India's two most reputed newspapers whose link incidentally is given in this article.
Regarding notability, let me introduce to you a city known as Hyderabad which happens to be the fifth largest city in India. Monda Market happens to be the oldest market in this city which was established more than 100 years ago.
I hope this clarifies your querries. An article of this size does not require any more references or the size of references will be bigger than the article itself.
For any further querries you can search the net regarding this market.
Regards

Thanks very much for your input into "Alan Ruddock" entry..follow-up question?
Hi Phightins,
Appreciate your insights re the Alan Ruddock entry- it's been very educational about how to proceed etc. I misinterpreted your 'nomination withdrawn' message from yesterday (on the at this article's entry on the Articles for deletion page) as implying that the "proposed deletion' box should now be removed ..but just got a bot issued: "level 1 warning about removing AfD template from articles before the discussion is complete."....
> Do you know if I get some sort of notification etc as to when such a deletion is appropriate etc?
Many thanks again! ( ps your Nittany Lions stuff suggest you may located close to me ;-> ) NortSide505 (talk) 18:54, 2 October 2012 (UTC)
- The reason that you were warned was because you didn't close the AFD and I should've been more clear in my comment on the AFD discussion and closed it then and there. I've taken care of it. Thanks for your hard work and keep up the good work. Go Phightins! (talk) 19:09, 2 October 2012 (UTC)

Hello phightins.
I have a question - we are a company with a wikipedia page. Seems that some unknown user has been adding malicious and incorrect information to the page. We attempt to edit it out, but it automatically reappears within minutes.
This username was the source of the change.
What can we do to remedy this problem.

2012 Penn State Football Team Game Notes
Hello, I am the person whose edits you recently made revisions to. Firstly, let me thank you for cleaning up my game summary. That was messy and your help is greatly appreciated. I am writing to you concerning the revert from a line score back to a semi-box score. I understand that while this format is often used on many pages, it has not historically been used on college football pages. For a more common style, please see 2002 Ohio State Buckeyes football team page. Just thought I would let you know. --98.179.165.213 (talk) 02:24, 7 October 2012 (UTC)
- Hey, thanks for dropping by. Previously, there'd just been a blurb and the linescore, without any scoring summary or statistical leaders. If you look at my editing history, you'll see that I work on a lot of NFL team pages and update their box scores, so I thought that that might work for the PSU page. In consultation with another editor who has significantly contributed to the page, I made this box. If you have further concerns regarding this type of layout for information, we can discuss it on the article's talk page. Thanks--Go Phightins! (talk) 02:28, 7 October 2012 (UTC)

BRD enforcer
I've drafted out the proposal at User:Betty Logan/BRD enforcer#"Request for stable state" project proposal. Hopefully I've addressed any concerns people had, and this is the version that will go before the Wikiproject proposal committee. It's been streamlined a bit to focus on operation and the name has been changed, but other than that it's doing the same job. Anyway, this is a message I'm dropping on everyone's page so they can check it out and make sure they are ok with it. Betty Logan (talk) 22:59, 7 October 2012 (UTC)
- I'm still not sure I understand this from a logistical standpoint. An editor makes a request for BRD "protection". What happens next? Does a BRD enforcer come by and physically do something to "protect" the page while a discussion occurs so that only some edits can be made to it, or does this just become a policy so that if it's not adhered to, there are ramifications such as blocking that could occur. I guess I just need some more explanation from a technical, logistical standpoint? I think the policy is written overly-broadly in the latest revision and needs more specifics. Thanks--Go Phightins! (talk) 01:08, 8 October 2012 (UTC)
- The page isn't protected, it is basically reverted to the stable version by another editor. If you are faced by an IP who keeps trying to push through an edit, they probably have no vested interest in not violating 3RR, so the idea is that it protects editors (especially regular ones) from a 3RR/edit-warring incursion when faced by a single POV pusher. This has two goals: hopefully the editor will see that it is futile to keep pushing through an edit, and if it comes to it, they can be sanctioned for edit-warring if it goes that far. From personal experience many single editors will back down or start negotiating if they are reverted by different editors. Page protection prevents all editors from editing the article, blocking prevents an editor from editing all articles, while this system will see just their challenged edit removed from the article. Betty Logan (talk) 09:02, 8 October 2012 (UTC)

Hi. Thank you for your recent edits. Wikipedia appreciates your help. We noticed though that you've added some links pointing to disambiguation pages. Regarding Digital
I removed some (a lot of) duplicate content that another editor added. Sorry for not putting an edit summary explaining this. –– Anonymouse321 (talk • contribs) 01:50, 12 October 2012 (UTC)
- No problem, sorry about that. Go Phightins! (talk) 01:52, 12 October 2012 (UTC)
- Great. I figured it was just an accident. Happy editing (and vandalism patrolling)! –– Anonymouse321 (talk • contribs) 01:55, 12 October 2012 (UTC)
Your review of Wikipedia talk:Articles for creation/Peter Monroe Hagan
A question on the AfC help desk led me to your review of that draft. It's not a BLP because the subject died in 1930, and it's not unsourced because the draft's author refers to various 1922 newspapers and a 2012 history textbook. Of course it needs improvement, but please be a little more precise when you tell the authors what they need to improve. Thanks, Huon (talk) 21:33, 13 October 2012 (UTC)
- OK, there are no references in the article, however. My apologies for the ambiguity, I'll attempt to be more clear in the future. Go Phightins! (talk) 21:52, 13 October 2012 (UTC)
- References yes, footnotes no: Sheriff Hagan had publicly stated his commitment to protect black citizens, (Age of Barbarity, The Forgotten Fight for the Soul of Florida, p. 229 by Billy Townsend) when [...] - that's a reference, though not properly formatted. Huon (talk) 22:00, 13 October 2012 (UTC)
- I just re-read WP:REF. I was under the impression that references had to be included in the references section. I should have read the submission more carefully; if I had, I would have caught that the author did attempt to cite a source and would have re-formatted it. I have made a string of mistakes recently, ugh. I'll drop a note on the user's talk page. Sorry for this oversight, and thanks for bringing it to my attention. Still, I don't think the submission is quite ready for article space, but I should have caught the attempted references. Go Phightins! (talk) 22:06, 13 October 2012 (UTC)
A kitten for you!
Thank you for the barnstar! Yep, we all make mistakes sometimes, and we all need cheering up sometimes. When I need to snap out of a down mood, I put on the DVD of The Last Emperor or Romeo + Juliet or -wtf?!? - "25 Years of Maroons State of Origin Glory" .

- Clarification: Rugby league is (roughly speaking) an ultra-violent form of Touch Football. And the Queensland versus New South Wales series is most probably "sui generis" as the only case where matches between teams representing nations are used to select teams for a domestic competition.--Shirt58 (talk) 11:46, 14 October 2012 (UTC)

"Good start, but please help expand and add reliable sources." Really? Lugnuts Dick Laurent is dead 18:00, 14 October 2012 (UTC)
- Sports-reference isn't unreliable, but I've never felt like it is the most reliable source. I've updated the birthdate from a book source. Ryan Vesey 18:21, 14 October 2012 (UTC)
- I hardly think it's out of line to ask someone who created a one sentence article that included but one reference to help add some additional information and sources...Go Phightins! (talk) 20:54, 14 October 2012 (UTC)
AFC Newsletter
Hi there, regarding your comment about helping out with the newsletter if needed, my response is, "YES!". I only proposed the idea hoping that other users would join and help with the newsletter as I don't really know what should be included. I write the newsletters for WP Good Articles so I have an idea of what to include but I don't want the 2 newsletters to be the exact same. But so in the end, any help will be greatly appreciated!--Dom497 (talk) 23:59, 14 October 2012 (UTC)
- Technical stuff as far as how is not my strong-suit, but I am able to write and, if there's no other way to distribute it, I can copy-paste manually on to user pages. I also am unsure as to what would be included, but once that's determined, I'd be willing and able to help out with that. Go Phightins! 00:04, 15 October 2012 (UTC)
- I have access to EdwardsBot and I might be able to get the owner of ENewsBot to approve a request (he isn't that active so I may be hard but EdwardsBot is a go 100%). Tech stuff isn't my strenght either, my main issue is what to include (mainly writing) which I'm sure we can figure out....eventually. One of my ideas was to do a "feature of the month" which would be a short article related to the Wikiproject written by someone (See a WP Good Article Newsletter for an example) --Dom497 (talk) 00:12, 15 October 2012 (UTC)
- (edit conflict) I'll open a new thread on the administration page for some input. Go Phightins! 00:14, 15 October 2012 (UTC)

Re:RfA
Given the recent dearth of successful RfA, I have decided to make a run now and am letting you know in case you still wish to nominate me as you had previously indicated. AutomaticStrikeout 02:23, 15 October 2012 (UTC)
- Yeah I'd still be willing to nominate. Is anyone else willing, because I'd also co-nom if they wanted to be the primary nominator. Go Phightins! 02:25, 15 October 2012 (UTC)
- Well, Catfish has retired rather suddenly, so he's out of the mix. Dennis Brown will probably disagree with my decision to run now, which I understand, so I won't bother him. I don't know of anyone else who has offered, and asking someone could be considered canvassing, so you'll get top (and only) billing in the noms section. AutomaticStrikeout 02:30, 15 October 2012 (UTC)
- I saw Catfish retire, that was disappointing. Do you want me to start the process now or tomorrow? My only other thoughts are Bagumba and Ryan Vesey. Go Phightins! 02:32, 15 October 2012 (UTC)
- Ryan probably won't support me due to a lack of experience, same as Dennis, that's fine with me. I don't know about Bagumba, but he has not offered, so I won't ask. You could start the process now, I'll have to answer the first three questions to begin with. AutomaticStrikeout 02:35, 15 October 2012 (UTC)
- All right, but fair warning, within the next half hour or so I'm going to go to sleep, but I'll get it started. Hopefully I won't make any mistakes that'll jeopardize anything. Go Phightins! 02:36, 15 October 2012 (UTC)

- Working on the intro. Safe to say "he", right? Go Phightins! 02:43, 15 October 2012 (UTC)
- Right ! Don't feel bad, I asked Bagumba the same question. AutomaticStrikeout 02:45, 15 October 2012 (UTC)
- Any particular articles you'd like me to mention that you're particularly fond of? Go Phightins! 02:46, 15 October 2012 (UTC)
- Not necessarily. AutomaticStrikeout 02:48, 15 October 2012 (UTC)

Your request for rollback
Hi Go Phightins!. After reviewing your request for rollback, I have enabled rollback on your account. Keep in mind these things when going to use rollback:
- Getting rollback is no more momentous than installing Twinkle.
- Rollback should be used to revert clear cases of vandalism only, and not good faith edits.
- Rollback should never be used to edit war.
- If abused, rollback rights can be revoked.
- Use common sense.
If you no longer want rollback, contact me and I'll remove it. Also, for some more information on how to use rollback, see Wikipedia:New admin school/Rollback (even though you're not an admin). I'm sure you'll do great with rollback, but feel free to leave me a message on my talk page if you run into troubles or have any questions about appropriate/inappropriate use of rollback. Thank you for helping to reduce vandalism. Happy editing! Yunshui 雲水 07:34, 15 October 2012 (UTC)
Adoption
Hi Go Phightins! I'm sorry I've taken so long to come back to you, unfortunately the real world has intefered with my time on wikipedia. Unfortunately, I'm not really taking on any adoptees at the moment, I've been neglecting the ones I've had for so long - it seems unfair to accept more. Have you checked out the list of adopters? They're all said in the past few weeks that they'd be willing to adopt people, so now would be a good time to ask them. You're always willing to come round to my page and ask questions too, where I can guarantee you a nice friendly response. If you don't get one, you get your money back. - I have talked to Rcsprinter123 and it looks like he's willing. Thanks for your help--Go Phightins! 19:04, 15 October 2012 (UTC)
